The territory of the historical Georgian region of Racha is today a part of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, one of the nine Georgian regions (mkhare). Racha is a spectacularly beautiful highland region located in the northwest of Georgia and hemmed in by the Greater Caucasus mountains and Svaneti. Racha is famous for its wonderful food, for especially their baked bread. The attractive beauty of this region, the slopes of the Greater Caucasus, the coniferous forests, gashing rivers and lovely streams all leave an unforgettable impression. Here are five reasons why you should visit Racha.

Shaori Lake

There are several water reservoirs in Georgia, but the Shaori lake is definitely one of the most beautiful ones. It is located in Racha region on 1,100 meters above sea level. The surrounding colorful nature is amazing and the water quality excellent. The spots around the Shaori Lake are perfect for camping, fishing and swimming. Not in winter of course, as the lake is frozen often.

Nikortsminda

Only a few minutes after Shaori Lake you will reach Nikortsminda, a mountain village which is isolated during winters and which offers an outstanding natural beauty. One of the main highlights is the Nikortsminda Cathedral which was built more than 1,000 years ago during the reign of King Bragrat III. The cathedral is remarkable for its magnificent exterior decorations including multiple-figured story-telling reliefs representing different evangelic episodes, figures of the Saints and real and fantastic beasts.

Shovi Resort

After a drive which will take a bit more than one hour from Ambrolauri, you will reach the mountain village Shovi, which is located only 5 km from the border with North Ossetia-Alania, one of the North-Caucasian regions of Russia. Located on 1,650 meters above sea level, Shovi Resort one of the most famous health resorts in Georgia. The area is well-known for its healthy mountain climate, its forests that occupy more than 25,000 hectares, various wild birds and other animals and lots of natural mineral water springs. Those natural waters consist of different compositions and help to cure many different diseases.

Nature around Shovi

Udziro Tba


Udzoro Tba, which means bottomless lake, is a small alpine lake located not far from the Shaori Reservoir at an altitude of 2,800 meters. As the water is very cold and for swimming the lake is only convenient for the most brave people.

Khvanchkara


Khvanchkara is one of the most famous vineyards in Racha and in whole Georgia. The Khvanchkara red wine has a strong, harmonious taste with complex flavors of red fruit, dominated by raspberry. The grapes only grow in Khvanchkara and nowhere else, which makes this wine very unique.
How to get there: By car or Marshrutka from Kutaisi (Distance: 84 km) or from Ambrolauri (15 km)
