On this private trip through Georgia, you experience the country in an authentic way. In the remote mountain region of Khevsureti, you visit abandoned mountain villages and medieval fortresses – the last witnesses of a harsh and warlike past.

On the second part of this trip, we dedicate ourselves to the Georgian food and drink culture. You will taste natural, organically produced wines, enjoy the diversified Georgian cuisine and even learn how to prepare two typical Georgian dishes yourself in a cooking course with friends of ours.

We move as often as possible away from the main tourist streams, but we still visit the most important sights like the Gergeti Trinity Church, the Davit Gareja Cave Monastery, the small town Sighnaghi, the Gremi Fortress or the old town of Tbilisi.

  • Day 1
    : Tbilisi (arrival)

    After your landing at the Tbilisi International Airport, your guide or a driver is waiting for you at the arrival hall inside the airport holding a plate with your name on it.

    The transfer to your accommodation in Tbilisi takes around 30 minutes. Together with your guide, you discuss your tour which starts the next day and then you enjoy your free evening in Tbilisi.

  • Day 2
    : Tbilisi, Ananuri, Gudauri, Kobi, Truso Gorge, Sno, Stepantsminda

    On the Georgian Military Road, which connects Tbilisi and Vladikavkaz in the Russian Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, we drive to the north.

    On the shore of Zhinvali Reservoir, we visit the Ananuri Fortress. The oldest parts of the complex were built in the 13th century. We continue our journey more and more into the mountains of the Greater Caucasus. In Georgia’s ski resort number one, Gudauri, we have a ride with a recently established cable car that takes us to Kobi. The 7.5 km long journey takes around 15 minutes.



    After lunch, we continue our trip and drive into the Truso Valley, where we have a short hike in the breathtaking nature of the Greater Caucasus. In Stepantsminda we visit the famous and marvelous Gergeti Trinity Church.

  • Day 3
    : Stepantsminda, Zhinvali Reservoir, Jomardi Adventure Park, Shatili

    We leave Stepantsminda and the Kazbegi region and drive south on the Georgian Military Highway.

    On the way, we can stop at the Russian-Georgian Friendship Memorial, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view. We circumnavigate the Zhinvali Reservoir and drive north along its eastern arm.



    Our next destination is Jomardi Adventure Park. The park offers various leisure activities, for example, a rope park or river rafting on the river Pshavi Aragvi. The trip is 15 km long, lasts about 1.5 hours and is rather easy to manage. The IRF certified guides offer every support.



    Via the Datvisjvari mountain pass, we reach the remote part of Khevsureti, where we spend the night in a medieval tower in Shatili.

  • Day 4
    : Shatili, Mutso, Ardoti, Shatili

    From Shatili we drive along the border with Chechnya, which is located beyond the mountain range. After 45 min we reach Mutso, a small and abandoned village located on a rocky mountain at an elevation of 1,880 m.

    We walk all the way up on a small trail which is quite challenging. If you’re afraid of heights, it may be better to wait downstairs and have a coffee in the small restaurant.



    Mutso consists of approximately 30 medieval fortified dwelling units, four combat towers and several ruins. The hike up is worth every step because the view of the valley and the surrounding mountains is absolutely gorgeous.



    Another abandoned village we visit is Ardoti. In the past, it used to be used to house lepers and sick people in isolation. In the afternoon we drive back to Shatili, where we may have dinner in the guesthouse or barbecue at the campfire.

  • Day 5
    : Shatili, Mtskheta, Jvari, Tbilisi

    Today we leave the Khevsureti mountain region and drive back to Tbilisi.

    On the way, we visit Georgia’s ancient capital Mtskheta, where we can see the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. On a hill above Mtskheta, we visit the Jvari Monastery as well. The view you can enjoy from there is amazing.



    In Tbilisi there are many options: besides sightseeing, a visit to one of the very best Georgian restaurants in town is a good way to recover from the long return journey to the capital.

  • Day 6
    : Tbilisi, Telavi, Alaverdi, Gremi, Akhalsopeli, Sighnaghi

    Via the Gombori mountain pass, we drive to Telavi, the capital of the Kakheti region.

    After visiting the Batonis Tsikhe fortress we drive to Alaverdi Monastery, where we taste the Georgian specialty Matsoni. After a wine tasting (natural, organically produced Qvevri wines) we visit the Gremi Fortress and continue to Akhalsopeli, where we visit our friends Tika and Maka in their country house.



    In a cooking masterclass, they will show you how to prepare the traditional Georgian dishes Khinkali (dumplings) and Khachapuri (cheese bread) yourself. A decent lunch, wine and Chacha are also a must there. We continue to the small town of Sighnaghi, also known as the city of love. We stroll through the cozy cobblestone streets and enjoy again naturally produced, native wines in an authentic winery. Overnight stay in Sighnaghi.

  • Day 7
    : Sighnaghi, Davit Gareja, Tbilisi

    In the very south of Kakheti, on the border with Azerbaijan, there is the cave monastery Davit Gareja.

    Depending on the situation on the border, we can visit the whole complex or only a part of it. The Davit Gareja Monastery is located in the dry, steppe-like part of Kakheti.



    After our visit and a walk through the complex, we return to the capital, where we visit the brandy factory Sarajishvili and taste their different products. The company was founded in 1884 by David Sarajishvili and is the oldest brandy producer in the country. Arrived in Tbilisi you can spend a relaxing evening in the Georgian capital.

  • Day 8
    : Tbilisi

    We start our city walking tour in the old town, where we visit the Narikala Fortress, built in the 4th century by a Persian ethnarch. The fortress is accessible both by foot and by cable car.

    From there we go down to the Abanotubani district with its sulfur baths – after Narikala the second eldest part of Tbilisi. According to the Georgian Chronicles, Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century by King Vakhtang Gorgassali I, which was impressed by the hot springs in this area.



    These springs actually gave Tbilisi its name because in Georgian «tbili» means «warm». We continue our tour and visit other highlights such as the Bridge of Peace, the Dry Bridge Flea Market and – if you are interested – other sights as well.



    For dinner, we visit one of the best restaurants in Tbilisi offering amazing food.

    We pick you up in front of your accommodation in Tbilisi and take you to the airport.

    The journey takes around 30 minutes.
