Day 1
: Tbilisi, Gombori, Telavi, Sanavardo, Sighnaghi
Tbilisi, Gombori, Telavi, Sanavardo, Sighnaghi
Look forward to the Gombori mountain pass, the Alazani Valley and lots of Georgian hospitality.
Your excursion to the Georgian wine region of Kakheti begins with a spectacular ride over the 1,620-meter-high Gombori Pass. From the top of the pass, you will enjoy a fantastic view of green hills, valleys and forests. If you feel like it, a small picnic can be arranged.
From the Gombori Pass, you descend into the fertile Alazani Valley, known as Georgia's number one wine region. When the weather is fine, you will always have the snow-capped peaks of the Great Caucasus in view, which here form the natural border between Georgia and the Russian region of Dagestan.
The first stop is the Kakhetian capital Telavi. This pretty little town with its almost 20,000 inhabitants is one of the centers of Georgian wine culture. Among other things, the Batonis Tsikhe fortress can be visited.
Afterward, we head north, towards the mountains, to the Gremi Fortress. The complex, built in the 16th century, consists of the Archangel Church, a bell tower and a wine cellar.
In the nearby village of Eniseli, you can enjoy a typical cachet lunch. You are invited to the family of a friend of ours. Nothing touristic: you will simply be served what is available. And that is always a lot and always delicious.
In the late afternoon, you will drive via Kvareli to Sighnaghi, where a tasting of natural and organically produced wines awaits you. You can end the evening in the pretty little town of Sighnaghi, which is called the city of love.
